Authentic
In 1976, Andrew Ainsworth sculpted, fabricated and produced the original helmets used in the first Star Wars movie in 1976. Thirty years on, he dusted down his original moulds for the Stormtrooper helmet and resumed production.
Like the Battle spec helmet, the kit version originates from the same moulds as the Stormtrooper Stunt helmet, created by the original prop maker, Andrew Ainsworth, for on-screen use in ANH. The completed kit helmet retains the feel and soul of the originals but at a realistic price for costuming.
Andrew explains; "I wanted to create a low-cost helmet option that was as close to the originals as possible using modern production processes. By making a kit version to be completed at home, today's Troopers can still have a great looking helmet while saving a bit of cash."
How it all started
During late February 1976, Andrew Ainsworth beavered away making the first Stormtrooper helmets out of stone coloured HDPE (High Density Polyethylene)sheet material that he'd previously used to make garden ponds. The material is very tough and flexible, although difficult to mould. But the Studios were in a hurry to get anything. John Mollo (Costumer Designer) originally wanted silver helmets, but as no silver plastic was available at that time it was agreed that they should be shot blast and sprayed white.
As the material was so difficult to mould, the first batch of Stormtrooper helmets that went to Tunisia for filming the desert scenes were all shapes and sizes. Andrew made 50 Stunt helmets and every one would have been slightly different. It's only helmets made from these original moulds that will confirm to the original screen used helmets. Original Stormtrooper - the home of the truly authentic helmet!!
