Description
The Rebel Pilot (X-wing) Hero helmet is cast from the original 1976 moulds. With its distinctive amber visor, the Hero version was used for close-ups on the film. Today’s helmets by the original ANH prop maker make this a fine collectible which accurately replicates the appearance and finish of the original screen-used helmets. They do not get any more accurate than this! The helmet looks superb on its display stand or can be worn as it’s made from rugged ABS. Original helmets from the original prop maker.
In 1976 Andrew Ainsworth sculpted, fabricated and produced the original helmets used in the first Star Wars movie. Thirty years on, Andrew took his original moulds out of his movie prop store and resumed helmet and armour production.
Using the original master moulds each helmet has the same idiosyncrasies as the orginal screen-used helmet. Each helmet is uniquely numbered and signed by the original creator, Andrew Ainsworth.
These unique collectibles are the only helmets ever produced from the original moulds, used to create the screen-used helmets back in 1976. These helmets are not mere 'replicas' of the original screen-used helmet. They're much more than that........a piece of movie prop history.
How it all started
On 23 Jan 1976, Andrew was introduced to John Mollo who was obviously impressed with his work on the Stormtrooper prototype as he asked Andrew if he could also make 5 new helmets based upon the Navy helmet & Helicopter pilot helmet which he had brought with him. The next week, Mollo was back again at Nick's place to check over the work so far. Nick's diary confirmed this meeting at which Andrew shows Mollo prototypes of Rebel Troops, Rebel Pilots, Imperial Troops, naming them Cheese Grater and Jawbone, as they had no identification at that point.
Andrew recalls "We made around 20 Rebel Pilot helmets for on-screen use in Episode IV - A New Hope. The Hero versions were for close-up filming for the main characters, while the Stunt versions were used for more general action shots and got rougher treatment – a bit like Trooper events these days!"
