Original helmets, made and signed by the original prop maker
In 1976, Andrew Ainsworth sculpted, fabricated and produced the original helmets used in the first Star Wars movie. Thirty years on, he dusted down his original moulds and resumed production.
"We've not changed or sanitised the helmet design as we know our prop collector customers want them exactly the same as they were when we first made them in 1976. Originals!" Andrew Ainsworth
Using the original master moulds each helmet has the same idiosyncrasies as the orginal screen-used helmet. Each helmet is uniquely numbered and signed by the original creator, Andrew Ainsworth.
How it all started
On 20 January 1976, Andrew Ainsworth was asked to make a prototype Stormtrooper helmet. Armed with a rough clay model and two Ralph McQuarrie's sketches, Andrew got to work. The use of plastics and composite materials was relatively new in 1976 as Andrew, a young Industrial Designer, developed new products and built his own plastic moulding machinery.
As Andrew recalls "Through a trial and error method of sculpting and manufacturing, I successfully created a helmet that Lucas preferred over any other. The die was cast!" A few weeks later, Andrew was given an order to make 50 Stormtrooper helmets and 40 X Wing Pilot helmets for the filming of ANH, with more to follow.
