Original helmets made and signed by the original prop maker
In 1976 Andrew Ainsworth sculpted, fabricated and produced the original helmets and armour used in the first Star Wars movie.Thirty years on and SDS's production line has started again with today's helmets simply continuing where the 1976 run left off. Buy an Original Stormtrooper helmet made and signed by Andrew and you acquire a 'Blood-Brother' to the screen-used originals.
These unique collectibles are the only helmets ever produced from the original moulds, used to create the screen-used helmets back in 1976. We do not believe these helmets are mere 'replicas' of the original screen-used helmet. They're much more than that........a piece of movie prop history.
How it all started
Andrew Ainsworth, a young Industrial Designer in Twickenham, had experience in working with plastics and composite materials to produce three dimensional objects. These skills proved vital in creating the futuristic helmets and armour needed for ANH.
Andrew explains how the Imperial Navy helmet first got its Cheese Grater nickname: "When I was working with ANH’s Costume Designer, John Mollo, to develop the helmet we had lots of concepts on the go. As the back of the IN helmet looked just like a cheese grater, that's what we called it and the name has stuck to this day."
